On July 1, 2024, the government has announced a substantial increase in student visa fees for international students. The fees are rising from $710 to $1,600. That’s a whopping 125% increase! Pretty staggering, right?

Why the Increase?

The government says this hike is necessary to reflect the growing value of education in Australia and to support their commitment to restoring integrity in the international education sector.

Other Key Changes

In addition to the increased fees, there are several other important changes:

  1. Temporary Skilled Worker Visa (Sponsorship Visa):

    • The income threshold for temporary skilled worker migration has been raised from $70,000 to $73,150 per year.
    • The duration of temporary graduate visas has been reduced.
    • The practice of “visa hopping” is being eliminated. These measures aim to reduce migrant exploitation and increase productivity.
  2. Post-Graduation Temporary Graduate Visa (485):

    • The rules have changed, capping eligibility at candidates up to 35 years old. This encourages students to choose meaningful courses from the start of their studies, helping them gain professional experience in their field after qualification.
  3. Restrictions on Switching Visas:

    • Tourist visa holders and 485 visa holders can no longer apply for a student visa starting today. Those wanting to pursue their studies in Australia will need to plan carefully and choose the right path from the beginning.

New Visa Fee Structure

Here’s a summary of the new student visa (subclass 500) fees:

  • Base fee: 1,600 AUD
  • Additional applicant (18 years and older): 1,190 AUD
  • Additional applicant (under 18 years): 390 AUD
  • Subsequent temporary application charge: 700 AUD

Government officials assert that these changes will enhance the integrity  of international education in Australia. They believe these measures will help eliminate unscrupulous providers and support high-quality education institutions.

It’s clear that these increases and changes aim to improve the system as a whole. Let’s hope these new measures deliver the promised improvements.
