The trends in computing are different in different decades. In the 1960s, the aim was to develop computing power in a single device. In the 1980s, it was about multiple dumb terminals connected to a mainframe. In the 1990s, the dream was a personal computer (or Mac) in every household. Now, we’re back to network-based computing — only the broad access to Wi-Fi and mobile data has dramatically expanded access to networks. This new trend is called cloud computing, but with a key difference — we’re no longer tied to just one server.

What is cloud computing? How does it work?

The Internet Cloud is a type of service that stores data on the provider’s server. Cloud gives us access to data from anywhere in the world where we are able to connect to the Internet. IT companies sell or make Internet Cloud available for free, as a service that stores various user files on their servers. Service providers such as Google Drive, iCloud and Dropbox allow us to send documents, photos and videos to the cloud.

The Internet Cloud works similarly (ideologically) to a pen drive. You connect the USB stick to your computer, download files, disconnect the device and store it in your desk drawer. In order to upload files to the Internet Cloud we have to connect to it via an Internet connection. The cloud recognizes the user by his/her login and password. After logging in, we can upload our files. That is all! We have access to data from any device, both from a computer and from a phone, we do not have to carry a pen drive to access our files.
