What Is an RSA Certificate?

RSA stands for Responsible Service of Alcohol. It’s a short course that teaches you how to serve alcohol safely and legally. You’ll learn about:

• Australian alcohol laws 
• How to deal with intoxicated customers 
• When and how to refuse service 
• Your legal responsibilities as hospitality staff 

Once you complete the course and pass the assessment, you receive an RSA certificate that allows you to work in any licensed venue in your state.

Why Do You Need It?

Australian law requires anyone who serves alcohol to have RSA training. But even beyond that, most hospitality venues won’t hire staff without one.

Licensed venues can lose their liquor licence if they employ someone without a valid RSA — so they don’t take the risk.

How to Get Your RSA Certificate

Here’s what you need to do:

1. Choose an accredited RSA training provider

Each state and territory has its own list of approved providers. Make sure you select the right one for where you’ll be working.

• New South Wales (NSW): Find an approved training provider 
• Victoria (VIC): Approved training providers 
• Queensland (QLD): RSA training and certification 
• Western Australia (WA): Registered training organisations 
• South Australia (SA): Approved training providers 
• Tasmania (TAS): Training organisations 
• Northern Territory (NT): Responsible service of alcohol 
• Australian Capital Territory (ACT): List of Registered Training Organisations approved to conduct RSA training

2. Complete the RSA course

Depending on your state, the course can be done online or face-to-face. For example:

• In NSW, RSA must be completed through an approved provider, either online or in person. 
• In VIC, QLD, WA, SA, TAS, NT, and ACT, online courses are generally accepted. 

3. Attend the full session (if face-to-face)

If you’re doing the course in person, do not be late. Even being 5 minutes late can get you excluded from the course, and you’ll have to reschedule and pay again.

4. Pass the assessment

You’ll need to complete a short test or respond to practical scenarios to demonstrate your understanding of the material.

5. Receive your certificate

In most cases, the RSA certificate is available immediately after the course. In NSW, you receive a temporary certificate and later a plastic competency card in the mail.

How Long Does It Take?

• Face-to-face course: Usually takes 5 to 6 hours in one day. 
• Online course: Typically self-paced but can be completed in a few hours. 
• Assessment: Done at the end of the course. 
• Certificate issued: Same day (except NSW, where you wait for the card).

Is the RSA Certificate Valid Forever?

It depends on the state:

• In NSW, the RSA must be renewed every 5 years. 
• In VIC, QLD, WA, SA, TAS, NT, and ACT, the RSA certificate is valid indefinitely, though employers may still ask for refresher training after a few years.

What Happens If You Don’t Have It?

You won’t be hired — it’s that simple.

Most venues won’t even shortlist your CV if they don’t see your RSA listed. It’s a basic requirement for working in hospitality in Australia. Even if you have hospitality experience from overseas, it won’t matter unless you have a valid local RSA.
